WKU Wounded Warrior Run
Imagine joining some of the nation’s finest on a one-mile trek through the heart of your campus. The Taus at Western Kentucky did just that with their first Signature Event since being colonized in 2010: The Wounded Warrior Run.
Understanding the struggle that comes with building a Signature Event, the colony kept things simple, opting for a one-mile run at just two dollars per person with special rates for large groups.
“We wanted to make it as simple as possible,” said former Colony President Diego Leal Ambriz, “This is our first event ... We knew that if we only charged two dollars per person, it would be very accessible for everybody.”
When deciding what cause to support, there was no question.
“Several of our brothers are in the Army ROTC. They feel very passionately about [the Wounded Warrior Project], which is why we decided to benefit this organization,” said Diego.
The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) was founded in 2003 to assist soldiers adjust to civilian life after serving. When approached by the colony, WWP was eager to support the run.
“We contacted the Wounded Warrior Project themselves, and they really liked the idea,” said Sgt. Larry Lee, Event Coordinator. “We’re a leadership fraternity ... and the Wounded Warrior Project and the military is all about leadership too.”
The colony raised more than $500 for WWP and garnered even more attention with members of the ROTC leading the way, cheering on the participants as they crossed the finish line.
“The reason we joined ATO ... was to make a difference,” said Ambriz. “By benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project, we know that we’re making a difference.”
Lee, the newly elected Vice President of the colony, hopes to make this an annual event that continues to support WWP.
