The brothers of Theta Alpha continued their intramural dominance by winning a hard fought volleyball championship on Thursday, December 8, 2011.
After losing every match during the regular season, but improving the whole way, the brothers looked to close out strong building on the success of last year’s team. Losses against Delta Tau Delta and Sigma Nu in the regular season became victories during tournament matches for a more prepared Theta Alpha squad. It seemed as though this would be the time for the brothers to finally beat a strong Fiji team, owners of 14 consecutive intramural volleyball titles and victors over ATO the last four times the fraternities have played each other in volleyball.
“Our team was dramatically improving with each game,” said team captain Aaron Daeger. ”No victory came easy and I knew we were heavy underdogs facing perennial champions Fiji."
The stage was set coming into the championship game. The Hopefuls (ATO) vs. The Thoroughbreds (Fiji). After losing the first game, the Taus battled back to win a crucial second game to go on into the championship 15 point deciding game. Leading 14-11, on serve, the trophy was in reach, but Fiji scored a quick two points and regained serve. However, still up 14-13 and only needing one point to win, brother Brady Eagle delivered a punishing kill to solidify ATO’s victory.
“After we won, I couldn’t have been happier with the team,” added Daeger. “We never gave up and winning an intramural championship has never been more gratifying. The Theta Alpha brothers showed that persistence really pays off.”
